Why Writing to Your Future Self Works

When I write to my future self, I always begin with gratitude.

Dear Future Self
Dear Future Self

Gratitude for how far I’ve come.

Gratitude for the choices I’ve made.

Gratitude for the strength I had to keep going, especially when life felt like too much.

I thank myself for going back to school while raising children and working full-time. That version of me—tired but determined—changed everything. Every yes. Every no. Every “try again.” It all mattered. It all added up to where I am now.

Writing to your future self isn’t about predicting the future. It’s about shaping it.

It gives you a chance to name your hopes, to anchor your vision, and to speak directly to the most powerful version of you—even if that version doesn’t feel real yet. And when you meet that future self on the page, something incredible happens: you start living like you believe she’s already on her way.

💫 A Reiki Moment

Writing to your future self activates the solar plexus chakra, your center of personal power, confidence, and vision. This energy helps you claim your purpose and trust your path—even when it’s still unfolding.

Try this: Place your hands on your upper abdomen and breathe into your strength. Picture a warm yellow light expanding with every inhale. Say: “I trust my choices. I honor my journey.”

Then write. Speak to the version of you who kept going. Let her speak back.

📝 Words of Encouragement

When my students write to their future selves, they light up.

Suddenly, they’re not stuck in uncertainty—they’re crafting possibilities. They begin to see themselves not just as they are but as they can be. Not someone merely surviving, but someone thriving in the life they choose.

If you’ve never done this before, try this:

Pretend you’re 80 years old, sitting with your grandkids, telling the story of your life. What would you want to say to the you who’s still in the middle of that story?

You already know more than you think. You’ve already done more than you realize. Let your future self remind you of that.

✨ Put It Into Practice

🖊️ Prompt: Write a letter to your future self—five or ten years from now. What are you proud of? What did you overcome? What kind of life are you living?

Use “Dear Future Me” and write in the present tense as if everything you’re describing has already happened. Let your wisdom and imagination flow freely.

Writing to your future self is a way of building a bridge between today’s dreams and tomorrow’s reality. You get to choose how the story unfolds—and the page is where it all begins.
