Write Like No One’s Reading: Releasing Perfection on the Page

Releasing perfectionism through journaling.
Releasing perfectionism through journaling.

There was a time I didn’t want anyone reading my writing—not because it wasn’t meaningful, but because it felt too real. I worried someone might stumble upon my journal and uncover the messiness of my life: the heartbreak, the anger, the stories I wasn’t ready to say aloud. But eventually, writing became more than a release—it became a mirror. And as I got older, I cared less about being “polished” and more about being free.

As an adult student, I’d hesitate to share my work aloud in class. My academic writing didn’t sound like my classmates’, and my voice blended what I knew from books with the rhythm and flavor of my upbringing. But I learned that my voice—just like yours—is valid and necessary. Now, I tell my students what I had to learn myself: write like no one’s reading. Because when you write from that place, the truth comes out, and that truth is where transformation begins.

💫 A Reiki Moment

Perfectionism is a blockage—one that clings to the sacral chakra, the energetic center for creativity, emotion, and flow. When we fear judgment or don’t feel “good enough,” we shut that flow down. Reiki helps release those inner critics, the energetic debris that tells us we must be perfect to be heard.

Try placing your hands gently over your lower belly, breathe deeply, and repeat:“I release the need to be perfect. My words are enough.”Let this become your intention before you pick up the pen. Let the energy move and support you as you write from your truth.

📝 Words of Encouragement

When my students hesitate to write, I remind them: no one has to see this. The fear, the pause—that’s a signal. It means something wants your attention. That discomfort is the doorway to self-discovery.

And to my students whose first language isn’t English, I say this: there’s no accent on paper. Your thoughts are beautiful in every form, and writing them down gives them the space to live and breathe.

Whether you’re writing fiction, journaling, or processing an emotion—don’t lift your pen. Let it spill. Let it be raw. The magic happens when you stop trying to get it right and start letting it be real.

✨ Put It Into Practice

🖊️ Prompt: What would I write if I knew no one else would read it? Give yourself 10–15 minutes of uninterrupted time. Let your pen move without censoring. Don’t worry about grammar or punctuation. Let go of the editor. Let your inner voice speak.

Then, ask yourself: How did it feel to write freely? What did I discover about myself?

And if you’re feeling brave, return to that page tomorrow—and write again.
